Tasting Location
Dierberg Winery
Jim and Mary Dierberg appreciate the terrior of Santa Barbara County so much that they now have an estate vineyard in 3 different county sub-regions.
Their cool climate vineyard in Santa Maria produces estate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir and was planted in 1997.
Their warm climate (warmest in the county) Starlane vineyard in Happy Canyon, on the eastern edge of the Santa Ynez Valley; produces Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and others, was planted in 1996.
The third property of the Dierberg Estate, was planted 2005 in the Sta. Rita hills. The Dierberg’s are really excited about it’s potential because of it’s chilly and windy weather. The property of 70 planted acres, is also banked with steep hillsides and sits at higher elevation than their Santa Maria vineyard. Here they expect highly structured and very complex Burgundian varietals.
The Dierberg Estate tasting room is located on the Sta. Rita Hills property on Drum Canyon rd. It is just before the Foley Estate if you are heading west on the 246. It is worth making the stop for the flight of 6 wines for $10. You will be able to taste wines from Starlane and the Dierberg Estate at the cozy barn just off the highway.
Once turning off the highway you will see the still not quite mature vines to your left had side, as you meander towards the tasting room you will also see what we mean by steep hillsides.
Online reviewers rave about wine maker Nick De Luca's Cabernet Sauvignon from Starlane, which they poor sometimes at the tasting room. Many reviewers also enjoy the Pinot Noir and the Chardonnay as well. You can also taste the 3 Saints label at the Dierberg tasting room.
